Eels kingpin Mark Everett has spent his career writing songs that are funny, sad, slightly surreal and sometimes harrowing, with an uncommon eye for the most telling details, however small. This lavish vinyl set traces Eels’ journey from 1996 debut Beautiful Freak to 2003’s Shootenanny!, a period that took Everett from oddball outsider to Tom Waits-endorsed prince of US al. ock

Universal Music are pleased to announce the release of EELS: The Complete DreamWorks Albums, a vinyl box set containing all five studio albums, plus Electro-shock Blues Show 2LP live album. Tracks on this album were recorded at six different venues. According to the album's liner notes, the first ten tracks were recorded "somewhere in England" during December 1998 while the EELS were a support act for the band Pulp. The other five tracks are brought in from selected performances from around Europe and the United States.

The box set covers Eels first six albums, when they were signed to the wonderful DreamWorks records. Having been one of the first bands to sign to the label, they were followed by a slew of incredible artists. Beautiful Freak was the second album release by the label, and rightly garnered critical acclaim across the board. The beautifully melodic record is packed with what has become E’s trademark tormented lyrics, the sweetness of the melancholic pop songs cut with his caustic words. From the outset Novocaine For The Soul sets a harsh blueprint, for this exceptional debut. This bright and exciting sound, also exemplifying the bands complete disregard for genre as they treat music as sound as opposed to a specific structure developed for a scene. As both Souljacker and Shootenanny! Go on to demonstrate this, the former being an exquisite rock album, which is heaped with wild pop sensibility.
