John Watson Jr. (February 3, 1935 – May 17, 1996), known professionally as Johnny "Guitar" Watson, was an American blues, soul, and funk musician and singer-songwriter. A flamboyant showman and electric guitarist in the style of T-Bone Walker, Watson recorded throughout the 1950s and 1960s with some success. His creative reinvention in the 1970s with funk overtones, saw Watson have hits with "Ain't That a Bitch" and "Superman Lover"

He took up the guitar on the agreement with his preacher grandfather that he would not use it to 'play the blues'. His family moved to Los Angeles in the '50s and, as a teenager, he cut his teeth playing guitar, piano and singing in local LA 'jump bands'. Watson collapsed and died onstage of cardiac infarction whilst performing in Japan. Witnesses said his last words were "Ain't That A Bitch. Johnny "Guitar" Watson had a long, colorful, and varied career that catered to different aspects of his talent. He began as a straight blues player (with excursions into futuristic sound experimentation, as on 1954's "Space Guitar"), and reinvented himself in the '70s and '80s as a funkster. In between he had a brief stint at Okeh, where he recorded some excellent sides that were heavily inflected with the R&B feel of the day. Watson recorded three albums and some singles for Okeh in the mid-'60s.

And two tracks from the OKeh album in a Fats Bag - the Johnny Guitar Watson Trio Plays Fats Waller. Two For The Price Of One (Larry Williams & Johnny Watson) (0:00). Keep On Lovin' You (Larry Williams) (03:23). Ask Me (Larry Williams & Johnny Watson) (06:06). Ain't Gonna Move (Larry Williams) (08:42). Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (Larry Williams & Johnny Watson) (10:57) Love Is Such A Funny Thing (Larry Williams & Johnny Watson) (16:19). Takin' No Chances (Larry Williams) (19:04). I'd Rather Fight Than Switch (Larry Williams) (21:19). A Quitter Never Wins (Larry Williams & Johnny "Guitar" Watson) (24:13). Nobody (Larry Williams & Johnny Watson) (26:58). Find Yourself Someone To Love (Larry Williams) (29:36). 13. Fever (Johnny "Guitar" Watson) (31:40). Coke (Johnny "Guitar" Watson) (36:21).

Johnny Watson later became well known as Johnny "Guitar" Watson, but this album recorded with Larry Williams in 1967, remains one of the best things he ever did. The CD version of this album contains eight bonus tracks. The first six songs are red-hot instrumentals, culled from Watson's album for the Okeh label, "The Fantastic Piano and Guitar of Johnny Watson. The final two tracks, which include vocals from Watson, were originally on the album "In a Fats Bag: the Johnny Guitar Watson Trio Plays Fats Waller. More icing on an already delicious cake.
