Kent Nagano and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra present a program of mostly familiar and some maybe unfamiliar symphonic music inspired by traditional supernatural folk tales. It's fun stuff, although listeners will probably find they already have most of the material on their shelves. Still, it's nice having it all in one place, even if Decca chose to record it live in concert.

The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Kent Nagano are pleased to announce the release of Danse macabre, the second album produced in collaboration with Decca, the prestigious record label. Danse macabre follows on the heels of L’Aiglon, the lyric drama by Honegger and Ibert recorded by the OSM and Kent Nagano as a world premiere. L’Aiglon has earned numerous honors since its release in March 2016, including an ECHO Klassik award. The album was recorded over the course of three concerts presented on October 29 and 30, 2015, at the Maison symphonique de Montréal. It features the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and Kent Nagano performing works by Dukas, Dvořák, Mussorgsky, Balakirev, Saint-Saëns and Ives.

Kent Nagano's 2016 collection of supernatural-themed tone poems brings together three orchestral classics and three less frequently programmed pieces. Paul Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Modest Mussorgsky's A Night on the Bare Mountain are famous from their use in Walt Disney's Fantasia, and Camille Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre has become standard fare for Hallowe'en concerts. The Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal delivers vivid live renditions that capture the spookiness and fun of these eerie compositions, and are at their best in the swirling demonic passages of A Night on the Bare Mountain and Danse Macabre.

Although not all composed specifically for the occasion of the holiday, the pieces exploit its spooky characteristics including death, witches, skeletons and demons. The album was recorded live at three Halloween concerts in October 2015 at Maison symphonique de Montréal
