Barracudas live primarily in oceans, but certain species, such as the great barracuda, live in brackish water. Their silver and elongated bodies make it difficult for prey to detect, but makes it more difficult to be seen when viewing them head-on. When hunting, they tend to notice everything that has an unusual color, reflection, or movement. Once a barracuda targets an intended victim, its long tail and matching anal and dorsal fins enable it to move with incredibly swift bursts of speed to attack its prey before it can escape.

Barracudas have an elongate body and large mouth, with the lower jaw jutting out beyond the upper (Nelson 1994). The head is quite large, pointed, and pike-like in appearance. The gill-covers do not have spines and are covered with small scales. The two dorsal fins are widely separated, with the first having five spines and the second having one spine and nine soft rays (Nelson 1994).
