Opera magazine praises him as he generates lively spirit in his scenes with Rolando Panerai, a Leporello into in 60s but still able to inflect his lines with verbal point as well as expressive colour: the Catalogue aria is quite masterful in its slightly seedy relish. Renews automatically.

Rafael Kubelik and the Bavarian RSO provide an ideal framework-it is intense, fiery (penultimate scene, literally), witty (. cemetary scene) and beautiful (. non ti fidar) and the last scene of Act I (containing all four qualities). Thomas Moser's Don Ottavio (. Dermota for Krips and Simoneau for Mitropoulos)is pale. Jan Hendrik Rootering's Commendatore,. Frick and Boehme, requires a more substantive voice and dramatic presence, such as those of Kurt Bohme (Krips) and Gottlob Frick (Mitropoulos-his cast is even dreamier than that of Josef Krips, whose perfmeormance I prefer slightly). He was an excellent Don Alfonso for Karajan and Karl Bohm). So the performance is mixed.
