Bert Wilson (October 15, 1939 in Evansville, Indiana – June 6, 2013 in Olympia, Washington) is an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist. Wilson's father and grandfather were both vaudeville showmen, and as a very young child, he did routines in traveling shows with his grandfather, but after contracting polio at age four, he suffered extended paralysis and was unable to move his arms for years.

SONNY SIMMONS ! The disciple of Charlie Parker. The heir of John Coltrane and Albert Ayler. So, why a Sonny Simmons homepage ? For all the above reasons, and more. 9 times out of 10, a man is a legend because his true self his unknown to his contemporaries.
Bert Wilson, a jazz saxophonist sought out for lessons by players from all over the world, died Thursday in Olympia. Mr. Wilson was 73. The cause of death was a heart attack. He did things on the saxophone that nobody else could do, said his wife of 12 years and his companion of the last three decades, flutist Nancy Curtis. In New York and Los Angeles, Mr. Wilson recorded with fiery alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons, drummers James Zitro and Smiley Winters and trumpet player Barbara Donald. In 1979, Olson and keyboardist Michael Moore, of the band Obrador, having learned Wilson was living alone and miserable in Woodstock, . threw a benefit concert to move Wilson to Olympia.
They teamed with the late, great drummer Smiley Winters and the legendary Bert Wilson (heard on tenor, soprano and bass clarinet) for some rehearsals; their second meeting was eventually released as this 1996 CD. The quartet performs four Gale originals, Wilson's "Dusk," an obscurity, and a spirited rendition of "Giant Steps. It is a pity that the group did not last longer (Todd soon departed to move to Germany), because the chemistry between the players and their mutual inspiration are obvious.
Bert Wilson, at 57, is finally getting some of the recognition he deserves. Endless Fingers (Arabesque), his latest CD with his band, Rebirth, shows him to be a major contemporary figure of the tenor saxophone. Why has it taken so long for Wilson to be noticed? He has been in a wheelchair since childhood; housebound, on several occasions, for years at a time. In spite of this hardship or perhaps because of it, Wilson is a pure jazz player. His roots are in the Chicago tenors, especially Johnny Griffin . He studied extensively with Sonny Simmons and legendary drummer Smiley Winters in California. In 1966, he jammed with Coltrane in Los Angeles. He was playin’ the blues, Wilson recounts.
released January 1, 1966. Press Quotes: "Alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons was one of the most talented (if unfortunately lesser known) free jazz musicians of the 1960s. Except for a brief stint in New York in the early '60s, where he recorded with Elvin Jones and Eric Dolphy, Simmons spent most of his life.
