Karl Friedrich May (/maɪ/ MY; German: ; 25 February 1842 – 30 March 1912) was a German writer best known for his adventure novels set in the American Old West. His main protagonists are Winnetou and Old Shatterhand. May set similar books in the Orient and Middle East (in which the main protagonists were Kara Ben Nemsi and Hadschi Halef Omar), Latin America and Germany. May also wrote poetry, a play, and composed music; he was a proficient player of several musical instruments.

Karl Friedrich May (also Karol May) was one of the best selling German writers of all time, noted mainly for books set in the American Old West, (best known for the characters of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand) and similar books set in the Orient and Middle East. In addition, he wrote stories set in his native Germany, in China and in South America. May also wrote poetry and several plays, as well as composing music; he was proficient with several musical instruments. May's musical version of "Ave Maria" became very well known.

However, Karl May wrote about the native Americans in such a nice way that a delegation of American Indians visited him in Radebäul, Germany, to thank him for his efforts and to bring him several old American Indian artefacts. There is now a museum in Karl May's hometown. As far as I know, Karl May himself never left his homeland of Germany. 5 people found this helpful.
