The Notwist's first full-length since 2008's The Devil, You + Me is their first for Sub Pop. On it, the German electronic band's identity feels increasingly cloudy. Initially things seemed promising for Close to the Glass. Releasing the title track with its detuned beats underpinned by familiarly fussy electronics and Acher subsumed somewhere in the middle of it all was a smart move, resembling the kind of dubbed-out pop structures Margaret Fielder was practicing with her band Laika circa their excellent Silver Apples of the Moon. Better still was the release of "Kong", which comes stamped through with a forthright guitar clang, irresistible organ drone, and Acher hitting some wavering high notes not dissimilar to J Mascis ' falsetto.

It’s been a strange road for the Notwist. Listen to Agenda from their self-titled debut then turn to their 2009 scoring work Sturm. The change from grungy punk to ambient electronic is startling. Outside of Markus Acher’s vocal work there are few points that can tie the Notwist’s early work to the albums they released in the 2000s. If there was a turning point it was 2002’s Neon Golden, which is often considered their finest work.

Throughout Close to the Glass, The Notwist lets many sides of its sound peek out, as straightforward pop-rock melts together with the pulse of Krautrock until they become indistinguishable. But, like its most recent predecessors, the album never feels chilly, even when the band wanders through a nine-minute instrumental ("Lineri") late in the proceedings. Even then, no matter how many machines manipulate The Notwist's sound, they never drown out the human heartbeats at its center.

The Notwist's Close to the Glass, their eighth album, is a catchy and unpredictable marriage of playing your heart out on an instrument and the magnetic pulse of precise programming. Now, in 2014, we find the Notwist following up 2007's The Devil, You + Me with their most adventurous record yet. Song Title.

In January 2015, Close to the Glass was nominated for IMPALA's European Independent Album of the Year Award. Collaborations and side projects. The group has been remixed by Four Tet, Caribou, Grizzly Bear, Console, Loopspool, Panda Bear and others. The Notwist formed a group with Themselves named 13 & God, whose eponymous debut was released in 2005. Markus Acher, in addition to his work with The Notwist and 13 & God, also works with the band Lali Puna, while Mecki Messerschmidt now also plays drums for the recently reformed Schweisser. Michael Acher composes and programs for Ms. John Soda.

Talk about The Notwist - Close To The Glass

Damdyagab
In the years since NEON GOLDEN, The Notwist have continued to put out their moody mix of electronics and rock, and on CLOSE TO THE GLASS, they get their blips out with "Signals" and their more tribal percussion with the title track. "Casino" and "Steppin' In" take a more acoustic route, but "7-Hour-Drive" dives into layers of shoegaze-like haze and jangle. "Run Run Run," on the other hand, revels in its electronic backing, while "Lineri" wanders as if lost in a computerized jam session. "They Follow Me" ends the album with a string-based swoon, and you'll want to get even closer.
