Cassette - Original Jazz Classics. Altoist Gigi Gryce's next to last album before permanently dropping out of jazz has been reissued on this CD. With trumpeter Richard Williams, pianist Richard Wyands, bassist Julian Euell, and drummer Mickey Roker also part of what was a working quintet, Gryce (underrated as a soloist and a particularly strong composer) had one of his finest bands. The group swings its way through two of Gryce's lesser-known originals and three then-recent obscurities. Interesting and generally fresh straight-ahead jazz.

Gigi Gryce is an eponymous album by American jazz saxophonist Gigi Gryce featuring tracks recorded in 1958 and released on the MetroJazz label. In a Sentimental Mood" (Duke Ellington, Irving Mills, Manny Kurtz) - 3:35. Blues March" (Benny Golson) - 3:03. Seabreeze" (Larry Douglas, Fred Norman, Romare Bearden) - 2:30. Bangoon" (Hank Jones) - 2:43. It Don't Mean a Thing" (Ellington, Mills) - 3:16.

Gigi Gryce's mysterious disappearance in the early '60 was quite unusual, but this left behind some remarkable work. The Hap'nin's" is one fine example of Gryce's hard bop writing. His quintet is comprised of Richard Williams on trumpet (a VERY underrated player), Richard Wyands on piano, Julien Euell on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums. The music is a very fine example of hard bop and shows just how great of a composer Gigi Gryce was. Gryce also was a talented arranger for large ensembles. This album is now out-of-print and I don't see it coming back anytime soon. I'm glad I bought all of his recordings at the right time. Talk about Gigi Gryce Featuring Richard Williams - The Rat Race Blues

Fantastic hard bop record. A shame this is OOP. I'd love to see a real audiophile label like Analogue Productions tackle this as an AAA reissue, but since Concord owns the rights I doubt that's going to happen.

Gigi Gryce is a long forgotten genius of jazz. And The Rat Race Blues may be his masterpiece. Believe me: Jazz cannot be much better than this.
