Brown unleashed a deluge of phenomenal records during the '70s, and this set merely scratches the surface. Still, the bulk of the tracks are crucial numbers, with only "Deceiving Girl" terribly out of place. That's not because it's a bad song - it's actually a very good one - but it dates from the mid-'80s and Brown's split Judge Not album, and thus is sorely out of place stylistically. Perhaps it's meant as a reminder that the singer's career carried on apace well beyond the roots age. In any case, this is an excellent set, and easily lives.
