Sam Phillips (born Leslie Ann Phillips, January 28, 1962) is an American singer-songwriter. She began her career in the [[contemporary Christian music industry but, uncomfortable with that image and industry, she re-branded herself as "Sam"-transitioning into the mainstream market after meeting producer T Bone Burnett. Her albums include the critically acclaimed Martinis & Bikinis in 1994 and Fan Dance in 2001. She has also composed scores for the television shows Gilmore Girls and Bunheads.

With Martinis & Bikinis, Sam Phillips has revitalized the "Beatlesque" category with some substantial songwriting and a woman's voice, which turns the whole sound upside down. The Beatles hardly exhausted the possibilities of their late-'60s sound, and Phillips has the hooks and aphorisms to give that sound a second lease on life. One of the best and most vital records of 1994, Phillips' third mainstream rock-pop album (formerly billed as "Leslie Phillips", she was a Christian music star in the 1980s) is less a prosaic collection of songs than an organic stream of incantations and revelations from the Otherworld.

To punctuate matters, the album closes with a cover of Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth. ) The difference between Phillips and the vast majority of her pop-revisionist contemporaries, however, is that she never coasts on the fumes of her influences, but turns them on their head and gives them new life - regardless of the approach, her impassioned, spiritually charged songs remain the product of a singular vision.
