Partly recorded on the island of Ibiza, it incorporates Balearic beat and acid house influences into the group's dance-rock sound. The album was influenced by the then growing acid scene, and Sumner's experiences in the 500 Club in New York and Shroom in London.

Joined September 2011. Replying to rder Music.

The two albums released during these years, Technique and Republic; each charted at number 1 in the UK. It was during this successful period that the group's internal dynamic began to falter. Sumner was not fond of touring, and wanted to take time off from the group and produce a solo album. He formed Electronic with Johnny Marr and the pair released their first single in 1989. The group released the album Get Ready in 2001. It was met with critical warmth, but it was apparent that the group's popularity had lessened. The lead single from the album, "Crystal", reached the top 10 in the UK.

The album was re-released as an LP last Friday pressed on 180g ruby red vinyl with an alternative white cover designed by iconic Factory Records designer Peter Saville, as he had originally intended. Unknown Pleasures failed to chart upon its original release in the UK and later peaked at number 71, in August 1980, shortly after the death of lead singer Ian Curtis. 40 years on Unknown Pleasures now sits at number 5 in the Official UK Album Chart.

It was a garden ornament and we rented it for the shoot. It’s a very bacchanalian image, which fitted the moment just before the last financial crash and the new drug-fuelled hedonism involved in the music scene.

An ad called "Advertising technique" promoted the album in the US. The cherub on the sleeve is a garden ornament that Peter Saville found on Pimlico Road. Peter thought the bacchanalian image was ironically fitting for the new "drug-fuelled hedonism" in the music scene. Q: There seems to be a number of different sleeves for the Argentinean release of Technique. What's up with that? A: There are three versions of the Argentinean vinyl, and three versions of the sleeve.
