Doubled Exposure is a weird boogie album of immense humanity and warmth, driven to a great extent by Shuford s irrepressible charisma. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist D. Charles Speer is the adopted moniker of Dave Shuford, a member of the infamous No-Neck Blues Band from Brooklyn, NY.
Speer and his band the Helix mix blues riffs with country two-step boogie shuffles, tinges of discordant jazz, Greek drones, and an independent spirit into a clanging stew that somehow remains honky tonk even as it veers off into space.
Charles Speer & the Helix Dave Charles Shuford grew up in Georgia, absorbing the culture and history of the American South before moving to New York in the early 90s where he joined forces with The Helix (Hans Chew, Marc Orleans, Ted Robinson, and Steve McGuirl. The loose and free country rock boogie of Speer’s work with the Helix derives power from the tension between the traditional and the exploratory

Doubled Exposure does tingle throughout with the energy of a communion between breathtaking musicians flying through this rather derivative, extremely boozy, occasionally shallow southern rock from the mind of Dave Charles Shuford, also of experimental improv veterans No Neck Blues Band and who released an intriguing Greek-infused solo LP in 2011, Arghiledes. Indeed, such is the instrumental excellence from Shuford's peerless band that one might see D. Charles Speer & The Helix as a kind of yokel version of White Rabbits. The subject matter, however, leads this album into rather more.

Doubled Exposure - Very Good, Based on 7 Critics. Although D. Charles Speer & The Helix hail from Brooklyn, Doubled Exposure resembles the soundtrack to an existentialist Greek wedding set in the deepest recesses of a Tennessee backwater; and I mean that in the best way possible. Its consolidation of antiquated and contemporary music is generally inventive, occasionally poignant and always entertaining.
