Not the late-'80s garage rock side project featuring members of the Stranglers and Vibrators, but an entirely different group from Nova Scotia, this gang of Purple Helmets play a loose-limbed variety of early-'90s alterna-pop. From the sunny opener, "Mud in Your Eye," which strongly recalls Doug Hopkins' best songs for the Gin Blossoms, to the buzzy, jangly "Cheyenne," which would have fit nicely on a late-period Redd Kross album, the Purple Helmets don't show much in the way of originality or vision.
