The genus name Setophaga is from Ancient Greek ses, "moth", and phagos, "eating", and the specific pennsylvanicus means " Pennsylvania ".

Often cocks its tail high above its back as it feeds. The only North American warbler with pure white underparts in all seasons. The Chestnut-sided Warbler is currently rated as Least Concern. This bird species primarily breeds in the eastern regions of North America and southern portions of Canada. This bird has also been spotted in the Great Lakes region.
