Complex Earthy Fiery. George Russell Sextet at the Five Spot. The band includes trumpeter Al Kiger, trombonist David Baker, tenor saxophonist Dave Young, bassist Chuck Israels, and drummer Joe Hunt, along with Russell's sparse piano. Things kick off with a driving take of Miles Davis' "Sippin' at Bells," which features great interaction among the horns. Carla Bley's "Dance Class" is choppy, dissonant, and very humorous; she also wrote "Beast Blues," which features Kiger's muted horn, an energetic solo by Young, and a very understated solo by Baker.

George Russell Sextet Live in Bremen and Paris 1964 is an album featuring the George Russell sextet recorded "live" at concerts in Salle Pleyel in Paris, France, and in Bremen, Germany, in 1964. The record comprises eight extended pieces, of which four are Russell originals. The remaining songs are composed by Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. The CD also contains two interesting versions of Russell's '".

Even if Cherry is stated as leader, in reality he is a guest of highly professional band,led by pianist Bobo Stenson(Jan Garbarek early band's member and,later,regular Tomasz Stanko pianist). As one can expect, great Nordic band plays great Nordic jazz here - ECM type(down-tempo, cool, aerial, generally groove-less) with Cherry trumpet soloing here and there.
