Santa Lucia is a traditional Neapolitan song for voice and piano transcribed by Teodoro Cottrau. It was first published in 1849 in Naples by B. Girard & Co as "Barcarolla". The original lyrics of "Santa Lucia" celebrate the picturesque waterfront district, Borgo Santa Lucia, in the Bay of Naples. These lyrics were written by Achille de Lauzières or baron Michele Zezza. Cottrau translated it from Neapolitan into Italian during the first stage of the Risorgimento, the first Neapolitan song to be given Italian lyrics.
