Mostly, though, California X just goes, roaring through one deafening, full-tilt tune, stopping briefly to catch its breath, then tearing into the next. So much music that mines the moment indie-rock crashed into grunge drops D, riffs hard, moans something or other, and lets that be that. But Gurtowsky never lets himself lose sight of the song beneath all that sludge. California X can't help but bleed together a bit, what with all the pressing tempos, the muddled vocals, and the constellation of familiar reference points. But there's elation and ennui alike shading in these songs, two qualities you can't just borrow from another band.
