The Burmese arched harp, a little known treasure among Asian musical instruments, figures prominently in Burma's classical music tradition. That tradition, developed over several centuries in Burma's royal courts, exhibits the restraint, subtlety, and elegance of many aristocratic traditions - but in an idiom uniqely Burmese. What follows are descriptions and sound clips of various tunings used in Burmese classical music. The tunings of the saùn gau' are notated with G as the highest note  . Mahagita: Harp and Vocal Music of Burma. In this music it's most certainly not a case of the harp accompanying the singer; the two carry absolutely equal weight, working together on the song

Inle Myint Maung (1937 -2001, saung-gauk, or harp) and Daw Yi Yi Thant (vocals) were best known for their work performing classical works, known as Mahagita (Sanskrit for Great Songs). These are from the genre known as Thachinkan, often seen as the most poetic and refined of their era. U Myint Maung was considered one of the best harpists of the modern era. Originally from Inle Lake, he became an apprentice of the legendary U Ba Than in 1962.

Mahagita is a selection of canonical Burmese classical songs, recited by the incomparable Daw Yi Yi Thant, accompanied by the late Inle U Myint Maung. This CD captures the indelible otherworldliness of Burmese classical music the way few others do.
