Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, was composed in 1805–1806. Beethoven was the soloist in the public premiere as part of the concert on 22 December 1808 at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. It is scored for solo piano and an orchestra consisting of a flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, and strings.

The characteristics of Beethoven’s sensibility were to become evident starting with his third piano concerto. In the following concerts a new relation is established between the piano as unaccompanied instrument and the orchestra that covers a greater role, not being reduced to the simple function of accompanying the soloist. At the age of 14, in 1784, Beethoven tries to write a piano concerto in E flat major, of which only the piano part was kept. In 1790 he tries to compose a new concerto, this time in D major, of which only the first part remained. The first instrumental concerto composition was made in 1795 when he wrote The piano concerto in B flat major op.

Beethoven had attempted a violin concerto in 1790 but only 259 bars of it survive. He began writing it in late 1806, and it was premiered approximately one month later on December 23 of that year. Beethoven’s middle period is associated with heaven-storming, -throat masterpieces such as the Fifth Symphony and the ‘Emperor’ Piano Concerto. The Violin Concerto, however, is a far more relaxed work – more Elysian Fields than Battle of Waterloo. Donald Francis Tovey called it ‘one of the most spacious concertos ever written’.
