Summary: The third album from the Chicago-based post-rock trio best known for their dual bassists was produced by John McEntire (Tortoise, Sea and Cake). Record Label: Southern. Genre(s): Indie, Rock.

Counterpoint and circles of melodies and rhythms are captured throughout the record, stirring the listener with awe. As a trio, Dianogah doesn't fail to make this project a work of art in the most genuine sense. The band's instrumental music makes up for the lack of message-bearing lyrics on some of the songs. Though without meaningful lyrics, these songs still hold their shape and vibrancy.

Millions of Brazilians, Dianogah's third proper release, finds the group marrying the more textural work of their aptly titled debut, Old Material, New Format, to a formerly unseen layer of structural sophistication. Nowhere is this better evidenced than on "Flat Panda," a wide-eyed exercise in dynamic that showcases a few clever tremolo effects and the band's innate sense of melody. In a word: n. That said, it's tough to overlook the obvious limitations of a two-bass setup. While Millions of Brazilians is easily the most potent and concentrated effort Dianogah has yet to produce, it still lacks tonal variation. But even the crispest production or smartest compensatory synth can't squeeze blood from a stone.

Millions of Brazilians comes closer to my heart than any so far. It's a good sign, say I. Freshfaced smartmouths of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your wallet chains! This "greening" of Dianogah may partly result from the fact that, like everyone else, they're aging; the smart aleck role does not play all that well past thirty. However, in the most concrete sense, on this album it means the addition of several new instruments and a change of engineers. As fans already know, Dianogah song titles usually have no discernible connection to the song itself - especially when, as on this album, there are no vocals. The album's first track, "Wrapping the Lamb, Sir", opens with a rather standard Dianogah bass refrain played fast and low. Song structure for Dianogah often loosely follows jazz structure: a central theme, variations and departures, and then a return to the theme for the end.
