4 is the fifth album by the Swedish psychedelic rock group Dungen. It was released as a CD on 24 September 2008 by Subliminal Sounds (Sweden). The album was released in the US on Kemado Records on 30 September 2008. All tracks written by Gustav Ejstes. Gustav Ejstes – flute, organ, percussion, piano, strings, vocals, producer, engineer. Reine Fiske – bass guitar, guitar, percussion. Mattias Gustafsson – bass guitar on 3, 8 and 9. Carl-Michael Herlöfsson – mastering. Johan Holmegard – percussion, drums.

When I first heard Swedish psych outfit Dungen via the 2004 international breakthrough album Ta Det Lugnt, Gustav Ejstes' lyrics could've been as dopey as Neil Diamond's "Porcupine Pie" for all I knew. Turns out they weren't, really, but for someone who doesn't comprehend Swedish that's simply a safety net.

While Tio Bitar saw Gustav Ejstes relinquishing some of Dungen's instrumental duties to other musicians, specifically guitarist Reine Fiske, 4 is the closest he's come to employing a full-time band. The frontman confines himself to the piano and microphone this time around, only taking occasional stabs at flute and violin, while bassist Mattias Gustavsson and drummer Johan Holmegard join Fiske in creating Dungen's sonic sprawl.

Dungen has long been one of my favourite bands. Their music is a daily staple in the house, so much so that even my 3 year old daughter recognises any Dungen record from the first few seconds playing. If there's any ‘dream comes true’s’ left, having Joakim (Smalltown Supersound founder) request a remix for them comes close. It has to be pointed out, this is NOT a ‘Dungen’ album, but more like an exploration of the raw material. In some places only using a single sound or two to construct something new, in other places just rearranging sections of songs. Hope you all enjoy hearing this record heard through a new set of ears.

Dungen’s fourth studio album extends the acclaimed Swedish outfit’s sound past psychedelia into something far more rare.
