Artie Shaw created another smaller group within his band. He named it the Gramercy Five after his home telephone exchange. The original Gramercy Five made eight records in 1940, giving up his band in early 1941. But after Artie finished his service in the Navy, he revived the Gramercy Five in name, at least, in 1944. The new Gramercy Five recorded for the first time in January 1945. The Gramercy Five's biggest hit was "Summit Ridge Drive".

Artie Shaw and His Orchestra. Arthur Arshawsky (23 May 1910 – 30 December 2004), better known as Artie Shaw, was an accomplished jazz alto saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and author. He was born in New York City (but grew up in New Haven, Connecticut) and began learning the saxophone when he was 15 and by age 16, had begun to tour with a band. He reached Hollywood the first time, as a sideman with Irving Aaronson's band in 1931, performing at the famous Orange Blossom Room (site of the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929).

Including Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Count Basie. Including Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Giora Feidman. Artie Shaw and His Orchestra.

When the Quail Come Back to San Quentin by Artie Shaw & His Gramercy Five. First, because it's Artie Shaw and His Gramercy 5. This group was one of the greatest in the history of American music, and one of the most unique. The use of a harpsichord was revolutionary, and had at least a twofold purpose: to give the group it's own "chamber" sound, and to take advantage of the treble-heavy jukeboxes that would be the group's primary market. The first, which comprises tracks 1-8 of this CD, was formed in 1940 from members of Shaw's current, massive orchestra (this is the orchestra that had hits with "Frenesi" and "Temptation"). The second group, which comprises tracks 9-15 of the CD, was created in 1945 from members of Shaw's last great (and most experimental) big band.

Artie Shaw And His Orchestra & Gramercy Five – The Maid With The Flaccid Air. 2:54. Artie Shaw And His Orchestra & Gramercy Five – Hop, Skip And Jump. Artie Shaw And His Orchestra & Gramercy Five – The Gentle Grifter. Artie Shaw and His Orchestra – Love Walked In. 3:01. Artie Shaw And His Orchestra & Gramercy Five – I Can t Escape From You. 2:47.

A surprisingly wonderful album from Artie Shaw – one that takes his older groove and nicely strips it down for the 50s, and which features some especially great guitar work from Tal Farlow! Other players in the group include Hank Jones on piano, Joe Roland on vibes, Tommy Potter on bass, and Irv Kluger on drums – coming together in a loosely swinging mode that has lots of interplay on the longer-than-usual tracks on the set. Titles include the originals "When The Quail Come Back To Town", "Lugubrious", "The Grabtown Grapple", and "Lyric". tracklist: 01 - The Grabtown Grapple 02 - Lugubrious 03 - I've Got A Crush On You 04 - Tenderly 05 - I Can't Get Started 06 - Lyric 07 - Imagination 08 - Sunny Side Up 09 - When The Quail Come Back To San Quentin.
