Face A Maketa Ifantu Makonda Memi. This collection of 7-inches by the great, under-hyped Congolese group Orchestre Kiam makes a strong case for delving into the world of Central African melodic guitar ninjas and hi-hat samurais. I’ve got a tons of old soukous tapes like this that I often neglect. Good summertime music I plan to spin freely this week. 7 responses to Orchestre Kiam. CMD says: May 13, 2014 at 2:58 am.
A very rare Kiam song from 1984. No associated LP album as far as I can tell. I have read that Kiam broke up before 1980, so maybe this was a one-off reunion release? I'd love to know more. I was amazed when I tracked down this 45. It's a great song and the classic Kiam ensemble vocals are there, but the production is typically 80's soukous, chorus on the guitar and prominent hi-hats in the mix.
ORCH5 sample The orchestra hit has been identified as a "hip hop cliché". In 1990, Musician magazine stated that Fairlight's ORCH5 sample was "the orchestral hit that was heard on every rap and techno-pop record of the early 1980s"
