Breakin' Away assumes its own identity with brilliant results. Closer To Your Love" comes off as a tougher, more confident version of the songs from the previous album. Easy" with its gorgeous and subtle Latin flourishes has Jarreau's purposeful delivery coming off oddly poignant in its joy and beauty. The hit "We're in This Love Together" is on the album, just as the bittersweet "My Old Friend". Jarreau brings new life to "Teach Me Tonight" and it has a sweeping, dreamy arrangement.

Breakin' Away (album). Breakin' Away is an album by Al Jarreau, released on June 30, 1981, through the Warner Bros. Three single releases made the charts: "We're in This Love Together" ( pop, AC, R&B), "Breakin' Away" ( pop, AC, R&B), and "Teach Me Tonight" ( pop, AC, R&B)

BREAKIN' AWAY was certainly an apt title for Al Jarreau's 5th Vocalese Exploration released in 1981 to incredible commercial and critical success. Manhattan Transfer and Al Jarreau were top of the Jazz heap when it came to Vocalese, a rather narrow subgenre but one which easily lends itself to crossover success in R&B and Pop as well as Jazz.
