Lou Reed is the debut solo studio album by American musician Lou Reed, released in April 1972 by RCA Records, two years after he left the Velvet Underground.

During this period, The Lou Rainone Quartet released two CD's; "One For Ruppert" in 1996, and "2nd Nature" released in 1998. Since residing in New York City, Lou has become an in-demand pianist, both as sideman and leader. Some of the artists Lou has appeared with are: Jerry Weldon, Bobby Porcelli, Randy Johnston, Ted Curson, Bill Saxton, Ira Sullivan, Grant Stewart, Dick Oats, Joe Cohn, John Hart, and Ralph Lalama, and Joe Magnarelli. He has performed in many jazz festivals throughout the world, and continues to conduct clinics and concerts in Taiwan every year. The Lou Rainone Quintet+1 has released a new CD, Sky Dance in August, 2015, and appeared at Smalls for a CD release performance in September 2015. This recording of original material features Richie Vitale, Larry Farrell, Dorian Devins, Tom DiCarlo, and Taro Okamoto.

It was premiered in 1941. The piece is scored for clarinet (in B-flat), violin, cello, and piano; a typical performance of the complete work lasts about 50 minutes. Messiaen wrote the piece while a prisoner of war in German captivity and it was first performed by his fellow prisoners
