But why is it correct to say "Ich liebe dich", and use the akkusativ case? (I know that in Berlin one can say: "Ich liebe dir". You're asking why we say "Ich liebe dich", but "Ich vertraue dir", even though both of those verbs only take one object (so why not just have them all take the Accusative for convenience's sake)? Well, I don't thing there's universal rule to be understood here; or, at least, in my German courses, I wasn't told of one.
