Plug Tunin'" is the debut single by the influential hip hop trio De La Soul. A remixed version appeared on their album 3 Feet High and Rising. Lyrically, the song is idiosyncratic; "Transistors are never more shown with like, When vocal flow brings it all down in ruin, Due to a clue of a naughty noise called Plug Tunin' (Hmm-mm, hmm-mm, hmm-mm, hmm-mm, hmmmm)", however, musically it laid the foundations for the sound the group would realise more fully with their debut album 3 Feet High and Rising.

3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by American hip hop group De La Soul, released on March 3, 1989 by Tommy Boy Records. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. The album title comes from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising". The album contains the singles "Me Myself and I", "The Magic Number", "Buddy", and "Eye Know".

When I had De La Soul that was just my pet project. Like I can do anything on that and they look up to me. I was the man in their situation. So the actual record you hear on the album, is the demo we made of ‘Plug Tunin’. There was a song called ‘Freedom of Speak’ that we did, which was the B-side. That’s how it started. I was super happy when I heard ‘Plug Tunin’ on the radio. I mean with Stetsasonic we also had ‘Go Stetsa I,’ which was a big song, especially at clubs in New York. It received some plays on WBLS, but I was extra happy when I heard ‘Plug Tunin’ on the radio, and receiving a little bit of daytime run on the main stations in New York.

Some members were still unsure of what production actually involved, but it all became clear once each person actually worked hand in hand; Dave says: I didn’t have a concept of what a producer was until I learned more about the game. De La Soul and Prince Paul recorded their demo in Calliope Studios, NY. After their three track demo with songs Plug Tunin’, Freedom of Speak, and De La Games (later . Age ), an indie hip hop record label created by Tom Silverman, Tommy Boy Records, felt that De La Soul was just what they were looking for. In 1987, they signed with Tommy Boy, and in 1988 they saw their first single released, which was Plug Tunin’. The song Potholes in My Lawn came soon after.
