Not only was "Open System" Marco Carola's most accomplished work to date some years down the line, but looking in retrospective, it stood the test of time and remains his most elegant release ever. Smartly steering clear of the formula of his previous album, "Fokus", which was more of a collection of DJ tools aligned on one CD, here, he recorded a proper album, manifestin his true production talent, and proved that he was so much more than a DJ's producer (a might fine one, though!).

Slowly building up from the downtempoish Highview, he moves in some electro/tech-house direction, with a heavy accent on breaks, on the first half of the album. Very smooth and well done, with Introspective being my standout among the first seven tracks. It has this catchy clanging sound throughout, and really swell melodies. By the time Get Down drops, I can literary visualize Marco's heart coming all out through his production ink pen, as it is easily the warmest, most moving piece he has ever writtem, and reminds me very much of the beloved Flamethrower track by Adam Beyer. Then, Marco goes back to what he is great at - churning out funky dance floor techno tunes. None are bad, and most would get the crowd in heavy motion, despite not bein hard as many of his tracks on One Thousand. Body Dancer is worth a mention, with an uplifting vocal hook and a brief piano stab throughout. Ascent and Open Source are heavier on the bass and percussion, real devastators, especially the latter, with a hard rolling bass line. Effective, Solare and Avalanche are kind of boring and repetitive, yet the last two sound great in a set, due to their almost disco-like loops, which are catchy and easyly digestible, sure to give the crwod a chance to bust a hip! Overall, this is a very good album, more than just a mere collection of previously released material on 12". You get a wide array of music here, from tech house, to broken beat driven techno, through to some funky Naples sound Marco Carola got his name known for, and a couple of proper, four to the floor bombs. May not be a classic, but very well worth your time and money. You could get surprised at how good this actually sounds today. Some tracks from here have been regulars in my CD player for years, and I am still not bored.
