Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715–1777) was an Austrian composer. Wagenseil was born in Vienna on the 29th January 1715, and became a favourite pupil of the Vienna court's Kapellmeister, Johann Joseph Fux. Wagenseil himself composed for the court from 1739 to his death. He also held positions as harpsichordist and organist. His pupils included Johann Baptist Schenk (who was to teach Ludwig van Beethoven). He travelled little, and died in Vienna on the 1st March 1777, having spent most of his life there.

Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, formerly Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, symphony orchestra based in St. Petersburg. The Philharmonic Society was founded there in 1802, and its orchestra included musicians from eastern Europe as well as from Russia. After the Russian Revolution of February 1917, the society’s orchestra became the State Orchestra and was merged with the new Petrograd Philharmonic; the resultant State Philharmonic Orchestra of Petrograd won wide acclaim in the 1920s and 1930s. In the early 1920s it was renamed the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra

Dutiful Viennese court kapellmeister Georg Christoph Wagenseil may be viewed by some as having attained a special level of faceless mediocrity in respect to musical history, enjoying a position somewhat above that of the long-lived, enormously productive, and equally obscure Adalbert Gyrowetz. That some of Wagenseil's works have been mistaken for Mozart and Franz Joseph Haydn attests to some extent of their relative quality, and his Concerto for alto trombone is a mainstay for that instrument.
