In his playing Kalhor often pins Iranian classical music structures to the rich folk modes and melodies of the Kurdish tradition of Iran. Kalhor has composed works for and played alongside the famous Iranian vocalists Mohammad Reza Shajarian and Shahram Nazeri. Kalhor's 2004 album In the mirror of the Sky was a joint venture with the Iranian lute player Ali Akbar Moradi. His 2006 album The Wind is a collaboration with the Turkish baglama virtuoso Erdal Erzincan, with both Turkish and Persian pieces performed. At other times Kalhor has collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project Ensemble in the USA and the Kronos Quartet.

Kayhan Kalhor (Ghazal, Master of Persian Music) is a remarkable performer on the kamancheh, or traditional spike fiddle, while Ali Akbar Moradi is a master of the lute-like tanbur. While the tanbur has long been associated with the Yarsan people of Western Iran, and its Ahl-e Haqq faith, Moradi has given it secular exposure. Here, in fact, with Kalhor, he explores the traditional tanbur repertoire of the Yarsan, the two (along with drummer Pejman Hadadi) fashioning wonderful improvisations on Yanbur themes. There's an instinctive communication between the musicians that creates a tension.

Kayhan Kalhor is a composer of Kurdish and Persian classical music and well known as a member of the Persian/Kurdish folk and classical ensemble Ghazal and Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble. He is also virtuoso on the kamancheh, setar, and Persian violin. He is globally renowned for his original works, his interpretations of traditional music, and his collaborations with other classical and modern musicians. In 2004, In the Mirror of the Sky, a collaborative album with celebrated tambur player and vocalist Ali Akbar Moradi, was released by World Village. The Silk Road Ensemble's Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon was issued in 2005, as was the Masters of Persian Music's Faryad; the latter was nominated for a Grammy. In 2006, Kalhor formed an intensely creative project with the Turkish composer Erdal Erzincan.
