TPOK Jazz, short for Tout Puissant Orchestre Kinshasa, literally meaning "the all-powerful Kinshasa band" in French, originally known as OK Jazz, was a Congolese rumba band, founded by Jean Serge Essous and Francois Luambo Makiadi in the 1950s. The original name, OK Jazz, comes from a Kinshasa bar called the OK Bar named after the bars proprietor "Oscar Kashama", but is also been said to refer to Orchestre Kinois.

Band leader Franco became a national hero with his intricate, dancing guitar style – utterly different to that of any western axeman – and epic stage shows. This handsomely packaged 2CD set tracks his final decade (he died in 1989) as a career that began in the colonial era with three-minute singles expanded to 15-minute songs and vast bands boasting James Brown horn sections and bursting with pan-African pride.

Francophonic, Vol. 2 Le . Franco et le tout puissant OK Jazz. Franco - 3ème anniversaire de la mort du grand maître Yorgho (feat. Azda 1972-1973-1974 (feat. Makambo ezali bourreau: 1982, 1984, 1985.

The second volume of the Stearns label's anthology of the Congolese bandleader's recordings is thunderbolts and fireworks, start to finish. The prettiness of TPOK Jazz's records was often threaded with rage and indignation, and the last couple of songs here understandably address mortality face-on, but even in his darkest moments Franco treated moving the crowd as a sweet responsibility.

Franco's weight may have grown in the seventies but in the eighties Franco and TPOK Jazz became larger in many ways. The more than thirty members actually functioned as two bands: a touring band and one that played Franco's club in Kinshasha. The lengths of the songs grew until they filled a side of an LP: Ten of the thirteen songs included here top the ten-minute mark.
