Perlas & Conchas, the title of the group's latest album, refers on one level to how a pearl is created from sand, beauty from grit. On the other hand, talk about a feminine concha in South America, and you'll be invoking a particular anatomical slang term. Intentionally or not, Fémina's inclusion of the word underscores their positionality in the musical world as unapologetic women who are ready to resist. In fact, "Resist" is the name of the fourth track on Perlas & Conchas.

On their third album, Perlas & Conchas, their trademark ethereal harmonies and Argentinian folk percussion are on full display, but so are a marked mysticism and feminist spirituality. The album was recorded and produced by British producer and t Quantic at his New York City Selva Studios. The album also features a guest appearance by Iggy Pop, with whom the trio struck up a friendship after he discovered Fémina online and played their music on his BBC 6 radio show. Attention to symbology is an essential component of everything the trio do together. For the album cover, they chose imagery that echoes the album’s themes of shells, the ocean, and femininity.

The cover of Fémina’s third album is reminiscent of The Slits’ 1979 debut Cut, in which the Londoners appeared caked in mud like post-punk Earth warriors. Fémina’s version, which shows the members of the Argentine trio as surrealistic nudes in a desert landscape, is less confrontational and more fanciful - an impression that the music proceeds to support. Recorded with the New York-based British producer Quantic, Perlas & Conchas has a charmingly elusive quality.

Fémina channels blissed out, harmony-soaked soul music with a purpose. They took a musical side-step when Clara Trucco joined, and began drawing more from vocal harmonies and playing live instruments - a process that led them toward their unique style: a combination of soul, hip-hop and traditional Latin American music. The title 'Perlas & Conchas' translates to 'Pearls and Shells', a reference to the process through which a pearl is created: a speck of dirt, encased in a shell, turned into an object of wonder.

Argentinian vocal trio Fémina will release their new album Perlas & Conchas on 5th April. Produced by UK musician Quantic, who has spent much of the last decade in Colombia, Perlas & Conchas is the first album created in his new Selva Studios space in New York. Hailing from a small village in Patagonia, Fémina have honed their sound around close harmonies, merging soulful, swung hip-hop with traditional Latin folk rhythms.
