A Guy Called Gerald has been an iconic name in the electronic music scene worldwide for over 25 years. One of the UK's finest, most respected, innovative and forward thinking home-grown electronic music producers.
Gerald Simpson (born 16 February 1967), better known as A Guy Called Gerald, is a British DJ, record producer and musician. He was an early member of 808 State, and later achieved success as a solo artist. He is best known for his early work in the Manchester acid house scene in the late 1980s and the track "Voodoo Ray". His style developed during the early 1990s, and his 1995 album Black Secret Technology would become a "much-touted candidate for 'best jungle album ever.
I thought I'd like this more being it's the title track. The focus is on the vocals really, not surprising I suppose given it's a concept album. I like the final minute best without vocals as we get some energetic instrumental work. He Held An Axe" opens with acoustic guitar as reserved vocals join in.
Who is this guy who calls himself A Guy Called Gerald? What is 'Voodoo Ray'? Why can't you drink 'Hot Lemonade'? To find the answers to these questions and many more, I got in touch with the man himself, twenty-two year old house music maestro Gerald. I like the anonymity of not using my surname. I also like the idea of confusing lots of people all over the country. Says Mancunian Gerald YUCK. Well, I thought straight away after I'd finished the album, that it would be a great name. That's not a very good plug for yourself is it?
A Guy Called Gerald is recognized and respected as one of the most influential artists in electronic dance music. Highly creative and determined, he’s an example of a ‘true school artist,’ never having pandered to fads or trends and consistently pushing boundaries where others would have become complacent. In contrast to its Detroit techno counterparts, his musical explorations were more sound-system than production-line, infused with dub, reggae, soul and jazz influences. In the early-mid 1990’s as House music diluted into the mainstream, Gerald emerged with a new sound that had the power to shake up the lethargic dance floors once again.
it should be made impossible to rate it anything other than a 5. Not had a good listen to this for a few years now but for me it still sounds fresh and really well produced even 18 years after its release. Every track is quality and provides an outstanding example of what British producers were doing with the house and acid sounds of the time.
Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? A hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house, Detroit Techno and the UK dance music explosion in the late 80s. He is one of a few special producers who entered dance music in the jacking zone. He is the first UK acid house producer and the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same.
Breakin' Beats Since 1988. I Don'T have anything to lose so I don't kiss up. You get the real story.
