We're a Winner", which hit on the R&B charts that same year, represented a new level of social awareness in Mayfield's music. Mayfield created his own label, Curtom, and moved the Impressions to the label. Over the next two years, more Impressions message tracks followed, including the R&B hit "Choice of Colors" (1969) and the R&B hit "Check Out Your Mind" (1970). There are many covers of Impressions songs by the Wailers, including "Keep On Moving", "Long Long Winter" and "Just Another Dance". Bob Marley also sampled the lyrics of the Impressions song "People, Get Ready" for his song "One Love/People Get Ready". The Wailers had recorded it on several occasions before it was released as a single in 1984. The Impressions recorded a tribute album to Curtis Mayfield in 2000, which was released by Edel America.

The Impressions is the debut album by the American soul music group of the same name. It produced no less than six chart hit singles, including their biggest hit, the Billboard top ten pop smash "It's All Right", and the top 20 hit, "Gypsy Woman". After the departure of original Impressions lead singer Jerry Butler to a successful solo career, the other original members, brothers Arthur and Richard Brooks also left. We're A Winner was a huge hit single, reaching position in the R&B charts and in the Pop charts in January 1968. It was their biggest hit for five years. Despite some restrictions on airplay, the song's success proved unstoppable. Recorded just five months before the assassination of Martin Luther King, We're A Winner confidently showed the direction for civil rights to proceed. Moonlight Shadows is a poetic sonnet and a reminder that the Impressions were, and remain, unmatched vocally and technically when it came to their rendition of Mayfield's love songs. The trio really had it down and the music that Curtis and Johnny Pate created is still unsurpassed. Nothing Can Stop Me is the only song from their past, made famous by Gene Chandler in April 1965 (reaching R&B, Pop charts) followed by similar success in the UK.

The Impressions came together as a union between Sam Gooden, and brothers Richard and Arthur Brooks (members of a vocal group called the Roosters) and Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield (of the Northern Jubilee Gospel Singers).
