Kwes. - Songs For Midi flac album

Kwes’ music banks heavily on atmosphere. His debut EP, 2010’s No Need to Run, wrapped sketch-like beats in layers of synth swaddling and dub delay, and in 2012, his Meantime EP, the British musician’s breakthrough as a singer, arrived like a small, semi-precious object bundled between pillows of air. His debut album, ilp, presented an even blurrier kind of cherry-colored funk. But the emphasis there remained on his songwriting and his voice, which snaked through all that digital processing like a serpent in wavy grass. The record is meant as a tribute to his 2-year-old niece, Midori (the title’s a reference not to MIDI cables but to her nickname, Midi), and it feels appropriately childlike-full of playful melodies, music-box pings, and even sounds sampled from the toys of Kwes’ little cousin Connor. Those are presumably the playthings rattling about in the closing Blox/Connor, an unpredictable excursion through stuttering chord samples and skittering trap beats that begins whimsically enough but, like many a play date, finishes up in full-on meltdown mode.

Clearly a personal endeavour, and very much inspired by an image of youthful innocence, Songs For Midi expresses, nay exudes, a bright optimism that really can’t be sniffed at. gestures that it’s an effort in finding his own musical voice after working in the studio closely with everyone from Bobby Womack to Solange and Kelela in recent years, and we have to agree that he’s definitely located and rounded up his idiosyncrasies inside

Songs for Midi is his first solo release since ilp. (and its companion remix EP ilpix), and it's easily his most abstract work to date, doing away with vocals (other than a few brief shreds) and focusing on fluid, shifting textures. There's somewhat of a canned, tinny sound to it, and the EP's title fools the listener into thinking that it was composed entirely using MIDI

Half a decade on from his debut album Ilp, Kwes. takes centre stage once again with the release of his stunning new EP, Songs For Midi. For those who are not in the loop, the intervening five years since Ilp have seen Kwes. writing, producing, mixing and playing with a whole host of artists, including Bobby Womack, NAO, Solange, Loyle Carner and Kelela. Back in the studio and taking the central seat, Songs For Midi draws forth six tracks of very vivid and wonderfully hallucinogenic World of Echo electronica
