Niobe - White Hats flac album

For an artist assigned to the electronica genre, Niobe employs a lot of acoustic instruments on her fourth album, White Hats. The primary one is the acoustic guitar, which gives some of the music on the disc a folky feel. Niobe does set some of her songs to beats presumably generated electronically, but this is not a dance record. It is dominated by her languorous vocals, which are rendered in a voice with the same timbre and general style as Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones. She even begins "The Hills" a cappella, which would seem to defy the electronica tag completely.

It took me a couple listens to actually get into it, and even though some moments hit me from the beginning, the album as a whole never seemed to make a full circle and complete itself. The problem with this album is that you have to be in a very specific mood. But regardless, Niobe’s White Hats is an album full of simple gems, subtle space-pop and nice ballads. Not bad for someone whose turned to stone and whose children have been killed.

Niobe is the stage name of Yvonne Cornelius. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, to German and Venezuelan parents and based in Cologne since 1994, singer Yvonne Cornelius took her stage name, Niobe, from the character in Greek mythology, the daughter of Tantalus, king of Sipylos, who turned to stone while crying over the loss of her children.
