Bruce Springsteen went through a period of tremendous self-doubt before he recorded The Rising. The 1999/2000 reunion tour with the E Street Band was a huge success, they were just playing old material. Sadly, it took the tragic events of 9/11 to give him the inspiration to bring the E Street Band back into the studio for a new record.

Bruce Springsteen's 19th solo album has connections to the rest of his solo work, but it feels very different, he said in October 2017. Bruce Springsteen is finally preparing to release the solo album he’s kept under wraps for several years. He noted that while the new material has connections to the rest of his solo work, fans will find that it feels very different. He wrote the songs around the time he created 2012’s Wrecking Ball, but other work distracted him from finishing the album. It’s a singer-songwriter record, connected to my solo records writing-wise, more Tunnel of Love and Devils and Dust; but it’s not like them at all. Just different characters living their lives. He said he hadn’t written any new material for some time, noting, If I have some songs that I haven’t released, once they’re released, hen the machine starts turning for, ‘Okay, now I’m going to write for the band’ or whatever I come up with.
In the liner notes to his volume of Columbia's Essential series, Bruce Springsteen immediately lays out the problem with hits collections: "In any body of work there are obvious high points. The rest depends on who's doing the listening. Where you were, when it was, who you were with when a particular song or album cut the deepest. All artists have this problem, but Springsteen has it more than most, since he not only has a deep and varied body of work, but he has a passionate, dedicated fan base.
