Though not exclusively subtle and romantic, Riddle and Peterson strike a golden bipartisan compromise in rendering these well-known American popular songs into quietly burning embers of pure delight. It's a predictable mix, but so warm and heartfelt that one has to commend the participants for allowing each other their own personal ideas without selling out. Riddle's contribution was to form a unique group, unfortunately all unattributed, of ten cellos (no violins or violas), five horns, three flutes, a harp, and a percussion section

Oscar Peterson and Nelson Riddle. Oscar Peterson/Nelson Riddle. Myriad allstar appearances round out the rest of the album. Louis Armstrong appears with the Peterson quartet for a lengthy, sublime reading of "You Go To My Head. The personnel is, perhaps, at its strongest on a pair of numbers where Peterson and Brown-along with Buddy Rich-offer support to Lionel Hampton. The Quintessence exists not as a comprehensive tome aimed at Peterson completists. While the star on this release is unmistakably Nelson Riddle, Peterson and company sound wholeheartedly devoted to contributing their best work to the proceedings. Joined by Ray Brown (of course) and his regular drummer Ed Thigpen, Peterson plays with an enthusiasm that illustrates his trust in and respect for Riddle.

Night Train is an album by the Oscar Peterson Trio, released in 1963 by Verve Records. Album producer Norman Granz had sold the record label Verve, but remained Peterson's manager, and so supervised the Night Train recording session. The brief duration of many of the tracks has been attributed to a desire to have them played on commercial radio, which was reluctant to play any tracks longer than a few minutes. The cover art photograph is by Pete Turner and original sleeve notes were by Benny Green.

Peterson and Riddle constituted a mutual admiration society, and so it seemed only a matter of time before they made a record, which they did in the fall of 1963. At the time, the Oscar Peterson Trio was arguably the foremost jazz group around, and Riddle the best arranger in the business. After seeing the Trio perform at the London House in Chicago (now defunct), Riddle met with Peterson to discuss how Peterson’s pianistics could be presented in a setting similar to the sound of the old Claude Thornhill band, whom both admired
