Damn the Torpedoes is the third studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released on October 20, 1979. This was the first of three Petty albums originally released by the Backstreet Records label, distributed by MCA Records. It built on the commercial success and critical acclaim of his two previous albums and reached on the Billboard album chart. The album went on to become certified Triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Damn the Torpedoes is the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album we’ve all been waiting for - that is, if we were all Tom Petty fans, which we would be if there were any justice in the world, live shows for all, free records everywhere and rockin’ radio. Songs like I Need to Know and Listen to Her Heart from 1978’s You’re Gonna Get It and Refugee, Here Comes My Girl and others from this year’s model are bedrock - they will endure. Low-slung guitars and all that jumping around with a microphone - after all, ladies get ideas. Obviously, matter-of-fact doesn’t have to mean humdrum. What starts out tough ( Someone must have kicked you around some ), and might have stayed there, turns tough-minded ( You don’t have to live like a refugee ) - certainly a more durable attitude. Best of all, sparks fly.

Look Around was recorded during a time when musicians and composers were keen on experimenting with new sounds, rhythms and ideas and they had at their disposal a receptacle in "Top 40" radio that had not yet been completely taken over by marketing geniuses determined to narrow music into "focus group" packages so that they could sell more car insurance to the selected. Although brief by today's standards (about 30 minutes total), there is truly not a bad cut on the album. Look Around? I love it. Sergio Mendes is not in my opinion dated. I think they do this to minimize noise transfer. I always turn down the percussion sections on the "Get by With a Little Help from My Friends" track.
