Complete your Savoy Brown collection. Never the less, Savoy Brown first came to my attention with their 1971 album Street Corner Talking, which featured two killer songs, Tell Mama, and a blistering cover that is actually more a remake of the classic I Can’t Get Next To You, by the Temptations. so I had high expectations for this ‘72 release Hellbound Train. While the album opens with the fine bouncy boogie, Doin’ Fine, it shifts gears immediately with Lost And Lonely Child, a slower progressive psychedelic song that reaches back a couple of years, and reminds me of some of the work done on early Traffic releases.
Lyrics to "Hellbound Train" song by Savoy Brown: Hellbound Train I'm on it's track Too late now to turn my back Conductor coming ticket in his hand . .I'm going down the road on the Hellbound Train Take a long look lady 'cause you won't see me again Take a last look lady, yes hard and long 'Cause I'm going down the road on the Hellbound Train. Hellbound Train driving slow Move on down to the Hell below Conductor please won't you lend a hand? Got to get on board take me to your land. Yes I know I've been so wrong Too late now I'm moving on Hellbound Train I'm on it's track Moving down I can't look back. I'm going down the road on the Hellbound Train Take a long look lady 'cause.

Hellbound Train" fades in on heartbeat tom-toms and a sustained organ. Not much of a story here, just goin' down that road to Hades. Droning intensity and drama build during a lengthy two guitar solo section above continuous cymbal crashes. Released Feb. of '72 on LONDON Records' PARROT subdivision, Savoy Brown's eighth LP, HELLBOUND TRAIN (XPAS 21052) was their best-selling US album, peaking at on Billboard's 200. For sheer creepiness, it's hard to top David Anstey's cover art. Outside the gatefold, a trainload of ghoulish passengers peer from their windows at Perdition's flames and a crowd of frightening spectres.
