Hunx - Hairdresser Blues flac album

In February 2012, Hunx released a solo album titled Hairdresser Blues on Hardly Art. In 2016, he released his second solo album Seth Bogart under his birth name on Burger, featuring collaborations from Kathleen Hanna and Tavi Gevinson. Hunx and His Punx now consists of Seth Bogart, Shannon Shaw, and Erin Emslie. They released Street Punk in 2013 and toured with a new guitarist Nik Johnson. In 2014 they released a greatest hits for their Japan Leg of Street Punk tour.

Yet it would seem that even the coiffurazzi get the blues. Fresh prince of trash Seth Bogart is more commonly known as San Francisco Bay Area’s notorious Hunx. The sweetly impassioned album closer ‘When You’re Gone’ also might have you pretending that it’s just the shampoo in your eyes that’s making them water, with its echoes of the Moldy Peaches’ DIY balladry.

Now that our little Hunx has struck out on his own, though, with a few exceptions (most prominently, the title track), these elements are lacking on Hairdresser Blues, which consists mostly of straight-up love songs, happy-ended or otherwise. It feels like a more serious record than those with the Punx, as evidenced by Say Goodbye Before You Leave, Bogart’s heartfelt tribute to Jay Reatard; but former albums Gay Singles and Too Young To Be In Love did both feature moving moments in amongst sleazy vaudeville rock. if I am a sucker for the tambourine which is liberally sprinkled here and elsewhere on the album).

While Hairdresser Blues is technically a solo album, let’s be honest – Bogart has always been the guiding force behind his sound and style, and the sudden absence of his backing ladies is a detriment, not an asset. Though the explicitly girl-group sound is discarded in favor of a certain seriousness, Hunx was stronger with the girls and the glitz in the background. Because what made their debut sparkle with sincerity and charm is lost on a second try; Hairdresser Blues simply feels overly familiar. It could be the bonus disc to Too Young to be in Love, and no one would know the difference
