This week, Van Halen released their new LP Tokyo Dome Live in Concert, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band’s first live collection with David Lee Roth on the mic. In an interview with Washington Times, Eddie Van Halen reveals why the band finally decided to drop a live album with Roth, the current state of his relationship with the singer and whether Van Halen plans on hitting to studio to record a follow-up to 2012’s A Different Kind of Truth. We were trying to figure out what to do since we didn’t have time to put a studio record together, Van Halen says of Tokyo Dome‘s genesis.

Despite hitting the music scene way back in the late ’70s by absolute storm, Van Halen in 2015 (with David Lee Roth) finally have issued a live album, entitled Toykyo Dome In Concert. For the money, you get 2 CDs jam-packed with 2 full hours of DLR-era hits. Musically, the band – and especially Eddie – sounds great. Roth, however, comes through more often than not as a sloppy buffoon, which both adds to the true live nature of this release while also showing the band just ain’t that young anymore. Still, VH with DLR is good for Rock ‘n’ Roll and should be supported.

TOKYO DOME LIVE IN CONCERT features an electrifying performance by singer David Lee Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Wolfgang Van Halen. It took me awhile to formulate a solid opinion on "Tokyo Dome in Concert," Van Halen's latest live release (and the basis for their current tour). I was initially put off from it almost instantly by David Lee Roth's vocals, which are problematic to say the least; he's off-key, out of breath and his phrasing and timing are way out of synch.

Van Halen didn't release a live album until 1993, by which time David Lee Roth had long since left the group. Tokyo Dome in Concert arrived some 22 years later, by which time Diamond Dave had returned to the fold and Michael Anthony had left, replaced by Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang. In other words, this isn't the dream double-live set of the fans' dreams - the original lineup captured in their 1977-1984 peak - but rather a surprisingly muscular reunion  . All this activity turns Tokyo Dome in Concert into a marathon taken at the speed of a sprint - no wonder David Lee Roth often seems breathless! Track Listing - Disc 1. Sample.
