Steve Winwood is the debut solo studio album by blue-eyed soulster Steve Winwood. It was released in 1977, three years after the break-up of his former band, Traffic. Though the album sold moderately well in the US, it was a commercial disappointment compared to Traffic's recent albums, peaking at number 22 on the Billboard 200 album chart. In the UK, however, while Traffic's recent albums had only been moderately successful, Steve Winwood reached number 12 on The Official Charts.

Taking to the stage with little in the way of fanfare, Winwood and his 4 fellow musicians, all casually dressed and avoiding any hint of the trappings of the ‘star’ lifestyle, waste no time in getting to the point of their set – to play the hits for us. Opening his set with The Spencer Davis Group’s ‘I’m a Man’ Winwood, sat behind his Hammond organ, seemed happy and excited to be in Glasgow for the opening night of the tour.

This month in rock history: June 1966 - Elektra records released the compilation album 'What's Shakin', which contained the first d recordings by Eric Clapton and The Powerhouse: "I Want To Know", "Crossroads", and "Steppin' Out". The band consisted of Paul Jones (singer of Manfred Mann), Jack Bruce on bass, Steve Winwood on vocals, Peter York (of the Spencer Davis Group) on drums, Eric Clapton on guitar, and Ben Palmer on Piano. The same month, Clapton,. Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce started rehearsing as Cream

Winwood's self-titled debut solo album from 1977 wasn't a hit. So when he started making his second LP, he did everything his way, playing all of the instruments himself. Turns out he knew what his fans wanted. Arc of the Diver' hit No. 3 and went platinum. The album's first single, 'While You See a Chance,' reached the Top 10 (see No. 1 on our list of the Top 10 Steve Winwood Songs); the follow-up, and title track, missed the Top 40, but it's one of his most engaging solo cuts. From: 'Talking Back to the Night' (1982). Like the No. 2 and 3 tracks on our list of the Top 10 Steve Winwood Songs, 'While You See a Chance' rides a massively huge hook. It was Winwood's first chart single in almost a decade (since Traffic's 'Rock & Roll Stew' barely cracked the Top 100) and biggest hit since the Spencer Davis Group's 'Gimme Some Lovin'.
