Lionel Hampton began his career playing drums for the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band (led by Major N. Clark Smith) while still a teenager in Chicago. He moved to California in 1927 or 1928, playing drums for the Dixieland Blues-Blowers. He made his recording debut with The Quality Serenaders led by Paul Howard, then left for Culver City and drummed for the Les Hite band at Sebastian's Cotton Club. East Meets West is the debut album by jazz guitarist John Scofield. It was recorded in 1977 at the Onkio Haus in Tokyo with bassist Clint Houston and Motohiko Hino on drums. The opening tracks of either side of the LP include trumpeter Terumasa Hino, the drummer's brother. The album was released under the title John Scofield in 1978 by Trio Records in Japan. After Trio closed, Black Hawk Records released the album in 1987 under the title East Meets West.
