Time Out of Mind feels like the antithesis of our pervasive need to have an opinion about everything all the time. It is a reflection on a life lived, not a reaction to someone else’s ideas. There’s a place for both, as Dylan’s own brash, youthful songs made clear a half-century ago. The difference is one of insight, of 55 years of life slowly distilled into wisdom. Everything won’t be alright, but desolation can be its own unlikely source of triumph. Dylan had a grief that gave him nowhere to go but the grave-or, as he did, onward.
Time Out of Mind is the 30th studio album by the American musician Bob Dylan, released on September 30, 1997, by Columbia Records. It was his first double studio album (on vinyl) since Self Portrait in 1970. It was also released as a single CD. For many fans and critics, the album marked Dylan's artistic comeback after he appeared to struggle with his musical identity throughout the 1980s; he had not released any original material for seven years, since Under the Red Sky in 1990
Modern Times is the 32nd studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on August 29, 2006 by Columbia Records. The album was the third work (following Time Out of Mind and "Love And Theft") in a string of albums by Dylan that garnered wide acclaim from critics. It continued its predecessors' tendencies toward blues, rockabilly and pre-rock balladry, and was self-produced by Dylan under the pseudonym "Jack Frost".
Before Time Out of Mind was released in late 1997, the overall view was that Bob Dylan was finished. His last two studio albums (1992’s Good as I Been to You and 1993’s World Gone Wrong) were both entire albums of folk covers and, well, both were good, but neither was necessarily anything to write home about. And his last studio album of original material, 1990’s Under the Red Sky, was flat-out awful, maybe one of the two or three worst of his career, and it even featured guest appearances from Slash and Elton John, so he was clearly open to anything. Great stuff, eh" I own every Dylan album and I’ve seen him live 10 times and the guy still has the power to blow me away. A lot of older artists have made songs like this, but Dylan did it the best right here. If anyone was thinking this album might not be all that great because of the few songs in a row that I didn’t give great scores, think again.

Bob Dylan released 'Time Out of Mind' on September 30, 1997. Partly inspired by his own mortality, partly inspired by his own mythology and partly inspired by whatever goes on inside Bob Dylan’s head, Time Out of Mind is a milestone in a career that’s had plenty of them over the past five decades. But it’s not like the then-56-year-old singer-songwriter was at a total career standstill at that point. After stumbling through most of the ‘80s with one mediocre record after another, Dylan teamed up with producer Daniel Lanois on 1989’s Oh Mercy, his best album in at least a decade
At the beginning of Time Out of Mind, Bob Dylan finds himself in the same dead-day world as on 1964's "One Too Many Mornings. By now, though, he can't be bothered to romanticize the street and the distant dogs' barking; he can only moan about how sick he is of love, of himself. Saying it seems to give him the strength to go on, and go on he does, over 11 songs that are among his most plainspoken and musically eloquent. You may find this way different for Dylan the way I did the first time I listened to this album.
Time Out of Mind is Dylan’s first studio release since the solo acoustic bookends Good As I Been to You (1992) and World Gone Wrong (1993), which reinvestigated the songs that fired his passion as a long-ago would-be Woody Guthrie. Now, Dylan has made a coherent, sonically striking but equally subdued ensemble album that sorts through the mess of the more recent past. Save for the brief reminder midway through Highlands, the audacity of the young, supremely confident Dylan is long gone. In its place has come a voice that is less instantly arresting but nearly as disconcerting.
