A new version of Last. Deepest Purple: The Very Best of Deep Purple. Overview (current section).

While they started out in the late '60s as a psychedelic band, delved into progressive rock, and even recorded an album in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Deep Purple achieved their greatest success as a strong, straightforward, hard rock band, anchored by the powerful guitar work of Ritchie Blackmore and the show-stopping vocals of Ian Gillan (and later David Coverdale).

The first Purple LP to feature young David Coverdale on lead vocals and Glenn Hughes ex-Trapeze bassist/vocalist. This was a change for the band, and at a unique time too. They had become the biggest Rock band in the world  . Specially if you count the single When a blind man cries that was recorded in the same session but wasn’t chosen for the album tracks, cause Ritchie didn’t like it. There are no bad tracks there, and half of it contains some of the best hard rock songs ever recorded: Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Lazy, Space Truckin’.

Classic rock stalwarts Deep Purple released their new album, titled 'NOW What?!,' last Tuesday (April 30). By the standards which we might reasonably expect to measure new work from an older band, it's very good - or at least, the parts of it that are any good are very good. It's always difficult for bands with decades of history to move forward in recording new material. They're forced to walk a fine line between repeating themselves, and re-inventing themselves to such a huge degree that they no longer capture the classic sound for which they were famous. A press release for the new album promised that it was recorded with no musical rules, and it shows a modern and fresh production. to the point that Deep Purple have never sounded so close to the spirit of the ’70s in the last 20 years as they do now. And there's good news for longtime fans - that's essentially true on many of the tracks.
