Three O'Clock in the Morning is Bert Kaempfert's follow-up to his enormously successful album Blue Midnight from earlier the same year. The title track, a popular tune from the '20s, fared well as a single. Contemporary listeners have a hard time making sense of the orchestral pop of artists like Kaempfert, whose forte is the lost art of arranging. As rock & roll gained predominance with its all-at-once approach to instrumentation, most of the popular audience lost its appreciation for the arrangements of orchestral pop, and today this music is usually dismissed as Muzak

Bert Kaempfert was such a versatile orchestra leader that he covered several markets with his 'sound' and I think this makes it difficult to choose one CD from another. I prefer his soft, easy listening, wordless chorus tracks (like 'Love comes but once') to his upbeat MOR tracks (like 'A swingin' safari') but record companies take the view that their customers like variety and so mix both tracks together on Bert's re-issues.
