Bernstein turns in the most perfect performances of these three Haydn gems that I have ever heard, although he has some serious competition from Reiner in No 88 (with the CSO on RCA) and from Jochum in No 9. with the LSO on DG). Still, the combination of Bernsteins joy, the mind boggling playing of the Vienna Philharmonic and a pretty decent rendering of the stunning acoustics of the Wiener Musikverein make this an indispensable recording for all Haydn lovers. The Symphony No. 94 in G major (H. 1/94) is the second of the twelve London symphonies written by Joseph Haydn. It is popularly known as the Surprise Symphony. Haydn wrote the symphony in 1791 in London for a concert series he gave during the first of his visits to England (1791–1792). The premiere took place at the Hanover Square Rooms in London on March 23, 1792, with Haydn leading the orchestra seated at a fortepiano.

He himself was conductor of the New York Philharmonic, which figures in all but two works here. Symphony No 8 is an LSO undertaking, recorded in Walthamstow and using some fine British singers.
