Domenico Scarlatti: Staba. has been added to your Cart. The largest composition on the disc is the 'Stabat Mater' by Scarlatti, composed at Rome around 1715. It is in a contrapuntal style, the sequence of which refers to the Neopolitan custom, where the ceremonies of Holy Week were an excuse for liturgical scenic productions. It is scored for four sopranos, two altos, two tenors, two basses and organ continuo. The singing is 'perfecto' and the soloists are skilled in every way. There are ten singers in this early group of Gardiner's, and they are all noteworthy. I particularly liked the 2 countertenors : Michael Chance and Ashley Stafford. Chance has flawless diction and his own amazing 'golden' sound.
Pergolesi & Alessandro Scarlatti. Proprius PRSACD 2040 (1 CD, July 2007). Suzanne Rydén, soprano; Mikael Bellini, countertenor. With the singers and players engaged, it could have been a A+ production. But it isn't, because of René Jacobs, who does his best to turn everything he touches into a German passion oratorio. The non-historic organ continuo added by Jacobs in the majority of movements overpowers arias and slows down recitative.

Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa (probably 8 March 1566 – 8 September 1613) was Prince of Venosa and Count of Conza. The best known fact of his life is his brutal and violent killing of his first wife and her aristocratic lover upon finding them in flagrante delicto. The fascination for his music and for his crimes have gone hand in hand.
Domenico Scarlatti has been played on NTS shows including Tafelmusik w/ Francesco Fusaro, with Sonata In F Minor first played on 9 August 2015. Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (26th October 1685–23rd July 1757) was an Italian composer of the Baroque period, known primarily for his harpsichord works, whose individual style had an influence on the Classical style. Scarlatti was born in Naples, Italy, the sixth of ten children, and a younger brother to Pietro Filippo Scarlatti, also a musician. Scarlatti, Jacques Clément, Carlo Gesualdo, Francesco Cavalli, Monteverdi Choir, John Eliot Gardiner,Erato,1985. Sonata In B Flat Major, . 66/L.
Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757): The sixth son of Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico Scarlatti likely received the best musical education Naples had to offer. Around 1708, the elder Scarlatti took his son to Venice to study with Francesco Gasparini (1668–1727), who had been a pupil of Corelli. While in Naples, Pergolesi joined Alessandro Scarlatti in pioneering the changes underway in the genre of opera, particularly in the new opera buffa (comic opera). In 1733, he included within his opera Il prigioner superbo the two act buffa intermezzo La serva padrona (The Landlady Servant), which immediately became popular in its own right. Reprinted more often than any other composition in the 18th century, the Stabat Mater was an inspiration to many, including J. S. Bach. Pergolesi’s instrumental compositions include a concerto and sonata for the violin.
